How I downloaded an old video from my YouTube channel

Years later I suddenly realized one of my old videos was missing from my local drives — but thankfully it was still sitting quietly on YouTube, on a channel I lost access to ages ago. I really wanted a clean local copy on my PC, so I turned to yt-dlp (the modern, actively maintained successor to youtube-dl). Here's the exact command I used to grab the video in the best available quality, merged into an MKV container with the YouTube thumbnail nicely embedded as cover art:

yt-dlp -f "bestvideo+bestaudio/best" --merge-output-format mkv --embed-thumbnail --embed-metadata "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"

-f "bestvideo+bestaudio/best" → picks the highest resolution video stream + the best audio stream (and falls back to the single best pre-merged format if needed). This usually gives you the true maximum quality YouTube offers for that upload.
--merge-output-format mkv → forces the final file into MKV (Matroska). MKV handles embedded thumbnails/cover art very reliably, unlike some MP4 quirks.
--embed-thumbnail → automatically downloads the video's thumbnail and embeds it into the MKV as cover art (so it shows up nicely as the file preview in most media players and file explorers).
--embed-metadata → pulls in title, description, upload date, uploader name etc. straight from YouTube and writes them into the file tags.
URL → actual video link (works even on age-restricted / private-ish old stuff if the link is public).

P. S.

yt-dlp needs ffmpeg installed (it uses it behind the scenes to merge video+audio and embed the thumbnail). If you get errors about merging or thumbnails → make sure ffmpeg is in your PATH.
If you prefer MP4 instead of MKV (smaller chance of thumbnail support issues in some old players), swap to --merge-output-format mp4 — but MKV is generally safer/more flexible for this use-case.
The file will be named something like “Video Title.mkv” automatically.

Old Windows folder won’t delete on reused SSD

After putting an old SSD into a new PC, the Windows folder from the previous laptop remains on D: and refuses to be deleted — access denied.

takeown /f "D:\Windows" /r /d y
icacls "D:\Windows" /reset /T /C

Why it works

takeown takes ownership of the folder and all its contents.
icacls ... /reset resets the permissions to inherited defaults → Windows stops protecting the folder as a system one → you can delete it normally afterwards.
